![]() ![]() Armored units can't be broken by weapons which makes them the premier Enemy Phase unit, making them ACTUALLY GOOD which is shocking. This small change means playing aggressively on Player Phase is incentivized, which is wonderful. Rather than weapon triangle giving bonus Hit & Avoid, it now lets you break enemies, preventing counters until next combat. There's a few new mechanics to change up the pace. I can't even remember a single Fire Emblem game that doesn't have great music. Engage not only has a really appealing and eye-popping artstyle, the animations carry a lot weight and every hit feels impactful. Shadows of Valentia and Three Houses were pretty close to making good fluid combat animations, but were held back by low textures or bad artstyle respectively. ![]() Animations for combat are the BEST in the series. Gameplay is where the game really shines. Sigurd with his insane movement, Micaiah with her healing, Lyn with her doubles from her critical animation, Ike the one man army taking on hordes of enemies, Lucina bringing in an echo of the madness that was Pair Up, Corrin with Dragon Veins, Byleth with Hero Relics and Divine Pulse. The way they managed to make every Emblem feel so representative of the game they come from and their character puts a smile on my face. Engage is obviously a love letter to celebrate the Fire Emblem franchise and as such includes a lot of fanservice for longtime fans, which I have been since 2011. Even despite me coming into this game ready to wave off the story, I found myself surprisingly enjoying the simple story. New fans coming in from Three Houses are in for a rude awakening. Besides, who actually plays Fire Emblem for the story? Genealogy, Thracia, Ike's duology, and Three Houses are the only games that have an interesting story, and I'm being generous with Three Houses. There's a big bad dragon and you need to go beat it up by collecting all 12 Emblems. 120h PlayedProbably the best gameplay in the series. ![]()
